Encourage 'Local' Thinking

I can see a lot of disadvantages springing from an obsession that everything must always get bigger! That it hasn't helped with the banks has been fairly obvious recently! A lot of fuel is wasted, and more pollution caused, by transporting goods all over the country that could just as easily be sold locally.

Companies growing ever larger also increases risks to their staff's careers, gives less choice to consumers and engenders the thought that someone at the top of a large organisation should naturally get paid 100 or 1000 times more than the 'little' people who keep everything working.

There's a lot to be said for ...

  • buying locally (where possible)

  • encouraging diversity of local trades, manufacture and services

  • calling on local expertise rather than going outside

  • growing an increasing commitment to and from local business
